491 Post Street: FAQs

Why did Epic purchase 491 Post Street?

‍From day one, our vision has been to see an increasing number of people in San Francisco orient their entire lives around Jesus. Over the last 15 years, God has faithfully provided spaces for our growing church: the W Hotel, 543 Howard, 250 Stevenson, and today, 414 Brannan.

In the past three years, our Sunday attendance has nearly doubled. That growth led our board and executive team to ask what faithful expansion should look like in the years ahead.

On April 8, 2026, our broker showed us 491 Post Street. Built in 1913 as a church, this building was created for the worship of God, and we believe this is a rare opportunity to reclaim a sacred space in the heart of our city. The sanctuary seats right at 1,000 people, giving us room to grow without adding a fourth or fifth Sunday service. It also offers far more space for kids, students, and our whole community.

Located in Union Square, 491 Post places us at the crossroads of San Francisco. Within a few blocks, you’ll find some of the city’s greatest wealth and some of its deepest need. It’s also proximate to so many transit options, including BART and Muni.

We prayed about this decision and invited our church into a season of discernment. Alongside that, we did careful due diligence to learn everything we could about this building. After much prayer and discussion, our board decided to move forward, and we closed on the property on August 7, 2026. ‍

‍
How are we paying for it?

‍Over the years, Epic has received one-time gifts in addition to regular giving. That past generosity allowed us to make the down payment, and responsible borrowing through our lending partner, CDF, allowed us to complete the purchase. As design and scope become clearer, we will discern how to fund the renovation, and we’ll share how you can be part of it when the time comes.

‍

When will 491 Post open?

Based on what we know today:

  • 2026: We are in the process of interviewing Architects, Builders, and other partners for this project. We are currently in the pre-construction phase.
  • 2027: Design and Planning
    • Because 491 Post Street was built in 1913, navigating San Francisco’s historic preservation requirements and modern seismic codes requires careful engineering and architectural planning. Investing a full year in this phase helps us secure the necessary city permits and avoid costly structural surprises once construction begins.
  • 2028: Construction and Renovation
  • Late 2028 or 2029: Open 491 Post

Renovating a historic building involves many moving parts, so we’ll update this timeline as we learn more.
‍

‍Will anything change on Sundays right now?

‍‍No. Our Sunday gatherings continue at 414 Brannan as normal for the foreseeable future.

‍
What will happen to 414 Brannan?

As we get closer to opening 491 Post, we will prayerfully consider the best future for 414 Brannan, choosing what serves our mission and stewards our resources well. We’ll share that decision with our church family as soon as it’s made.
